A committee comprising the directors from the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) in India is developing a proposal for having a single entrance test for all engineering aspirants in India. The move is being initiated because multiple exams put the aspirants under undue pressure for performance.
When this is implemented, it would lead to the end of the IITs’ Joint Entrance Examination (IIT-JEE) and all other individual entrance tests including the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education.

The latest report from World Intellectual Property Organisation shows that the US has filed for over 45,000 patents, Japan about 30,000, Germany about 16,000 and China about 8,000.
Any guesses how many from India? A pathetic 761!
Just think of it! We produce the most number of engineering and science graduates and our share of innovation is one of the lowest.
This goes on to prove one simple thing and that is, Aamir Khan in his movie 3 Idiots was right. There is a serious flaw in our education system that doesn’t allow us to think beyond marks and grades and landing up a job. No room for innovation. No room for pursuit of excellence.
What a shame!

The West Bengal University of Technology has decided to review its examination system following a revelation that students of private engineering colleges are scoring higher marks than those in reputable tech institutes.
Data collected by the university — the 100-odd private tech colleges in the state are affiliated to it — show that the success rate of its students are better than those studying at premier institutes such as IIT Kharagpur, Jadavpur University and the Bengal Engineering and Science University, Shibpur.
The trend has left the university concerned as all engineering institutions across the country follow more or less the same syllabus conforming to the stipulations of the All India Council for Technical Education.

Finding it hard to get academics at the level of vice chancellors to be on its inspection and scrutiny teams, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has decided to rope in professors for the task.
The AICTE had recently mandated that only vice chancellor-level academics must be included in teams which scrutinise applications from educational trusts to establish new technical colleges and physically inspect the premises before granting approval to the institutions.
However, the apex regulatory body has now realised that very few serving and past vice chancellors who were available to accept the assignment, whereas there are far too many institutions that need to be inspected and granted approval.

The World Bank has approved a $1.05 billion (around Rs4,780 crore) soft loan to fund India’s ongoing education projects, particularly those aimed at universal elementary education.
However, experts were skeptical about the utility of this loan; they claimed the aim should be to fix flaws in existing programmes, not raise new funds.
Of the $1.05 billion loan, the largest ever by the World Bank to fund education, $750 million has been earmarked for the bank’s third loan to Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA); the rest will support 200 competitively selected engineering colleges. The money has to be spent in the next two years.
